christmas is 50 days away!

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Just one word: The reality of living a creative life is that some days the well runs dry.  The good news is that sometimes it only takes a single word or phrase to jump-start the process again.

You can also play with words, change the spelling to something fun like girlfriends to gyrlfriends and other play on words.

During this season there are a lot of great words to play with and use for inspiration: Joy, Reflect, Create, Just Breathe, Believe, Let Your Light Shine, Beauty, Peace, Thanks, Grateful,  and many more.  Take time to write what you see, what you are thinking about, look through a dictionary and use those words that come to mind that may bring a spark of magic into someone else’s life today.  Then, make a card, a wall hanging, a magnet, or something else to reflect that/those words.

The Beauty of Paper to create keepsakes and treasures

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

The Beauty of Paper:  One reason papercrafting is so popular is because the essential material, paper, is available in such variety, abundance, color and pattern.  Paper is everywhere and it is not intimidating at all. It is a realistic staple that we reach for with purpose in mind – to jot down a note, make a list, write to a friend or family member.  We use it to enter into all manner of exchange with ourselves and others almost daily.  What is remarkable about paper is that it is simple.  Not meant to remain in its natural state, paper is about change – we can crease it, apply a thin line in shapely swirls that become meaningful words, brush on pats of color, cut into new shapes, or fold it into wonderful creations.  With a new and pristine sheet of paper in hand, we may hesitate just slightly before making that first crease, tear, cut, or drafting that first line, but once we have crossed over that threshold, there is little to curtail our progress as we manipulate or decorate paper to create beautiful keepsakes to be treasured for a lifetime.  What is your next project with paper?  Send me an email and let me know – I would love to see it!

Loving paper!

I see the turning of a leaf dancing in an Autumn sun, and brilliant shades of crimson glowing when a day is done. ~Hazelmarie Mattie Elliott

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Part of Carol’s story about papercrafting:

I remember the year my mother taught us how to make heart-shaped baskets out of paper.  We sat together in our little kitchen, the soft hiss of the radiator forcing heat into the room.  Snow was falling  silently on roofs and on newly planted evergreens and pudgy hydrants in a just-built postwar neighborhood in the mid 1950’s.  A pair of scissors and sheets of shiny red paper strips, saying to “thread and loop, thread and loop” as she deftly guided the bands through and around each other until the weaving was done.

I carried forward the tradition of making things with my own children, keeping all sorts of supplies handy, especially at Christmas, when it was our custom to exchange one gift that was handmade.

Make something by hand – it will be a dwelling place for your spirit for all time.  A simple ornament to hang on a tree, yes, but over time, more than that, it will stand as a symbol of tradition, a little place holder in life that embodies all you were and all you were meant to become.

A NOTE FROM EMILY –

My life is a lot like Carol’s.  I grew up crafting and sewing and I also enjoy doing that with my children.  I try to make art available to them and to let them use their imaginations in the process.  Hopefully, it will be a tradition in their homes also with their children.

As in the quote above by Hazelmarie, I don’t know about where you live but where i live it has really been glowing around here lately.  The evenings during twilight and the mornings as the sun rises is giving an amazing glow that shines through the gold, yellow and red leaves and the sky.  Just magic!

Join me for a class – it’s fun to get out of the house and meet others that want a night out.  Or, if you want a day class, check out those below at Impress.  Hope to see you soon!

Busy and Loving it!
~Emily

long, long ago, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century…

Emily’s Bites of Fun:

The more and more I read on the history of quilling and papercrafts, the more intriguing it is.  There were and are so many cultures affected by papercrafting, it’s fun to search it all out.

Here’s a paragraph taken from, “The Book of Paper Quilling” by Malinda Johnston:

  • “By the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, paper was more widespread and much less costly.  Its use in decorative crafts burgeoned, especially in England.  There, quilling was considered to be an appropriate hobby for the fashionable ladies of the time.  As a result, may women of the upper and middle classes became expert quillers.  At least one women’s magazine described paper filigree (or “quilling”) in some detail, and others published patterns.  Princess Elizabeth herself gifted her physician with a quilled screen, one which is now at the Victoria & Albert Museum.  And even novelist, Jane Austen, in Sense and Sensibility (1811), refers to a “fillagree” basket.”

A Note From Emily:
My August 13th class at Impress Cards and Crafts in Tukwila was a success.  It was great fun  to meet new ladies.  Some of them were pretty excited for some other classes.  I am getting ready for now to book a lot of those classes, so stay tuned!
