Travel with Intention

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Winter is travel time and traveling, especially when it involves exploring new regions or corners of the world, is a rich source of inspiration for many craftspeople.  The next time you are planning a trip, purchase several clear plastic sleeves meant to hold slides or small photographs (available at office supply stores). These ready-made sheets are perfect for collecting miniature mementos such as coins, bottle caps, paper scraps, ticket stubs, magnets, and the like.  Then, the spoils of several trips can be stowed away in a binder, full of tiny items and trinkets to turn into some of your craftiest memories.

Can’t afford a trip right now?  Be a tourist in the place you live.  Get out and see new things and collect items from your own city or the cities around you.  You can share them with others by making a card and keep some for yourself.  Shadowboxes are a great way to keep some of these things.  Odds are you won’t live in the same city for the rest of your life.  Hold onto some memories.

February is Almost Here

a bunch of roses? how about a bunch of classes!

Remember, classes make a great gift for any occasion.  Don’t forget to see the info on my new Wine Charm class at Goose Ridge Tasting Room in Woodinville in May.  Maybe do this class together for a date night, a birthday or an anniversary!  Whatever the occasion, it will be a great time.

I am also starting new classes at Ben Franklin in May – see below for details.

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Even the Envelope has a history behind it!

  • The Babylonians first wrapped and baked their messages in thin sheets of clay.  Later envelopes were made of cloth, animal skins, or vegetable parts, and prior to 1840 all envelopes were handmade.
  • George Wilson patented the method of tessellating (tiling) a number of envelope patterns across and down a large sheet.  In 1845, Edwin Hill and Warren de la Rue obtained a patent for a steam- driven machine that cut out an envelope shape, then created and folded it.  Thomas Waymouth, who had previously worked on paper bag machinery, developed a self-gumming and folding machine for Berlin and Jones in the late 1860’s.
  • Rectangular envelopes are preferred by the postal service, which reduces the amount of sorting needed to line up all the envelopes with the addresses reading the same way.
