Emily’s Bites of Fun:

Composition: The way the creative elements, colors and shapes are organized into a whole that is satisfying to the viewer.  Creative variables such as balance, color, and texture are all subjective considerations, that when combined form an image that is pleasing to the eye.  The main element of composition is balance and the shape of the unused space, as well as element proportion.  Composition may be symmetrical, off-center or asymmetrically balanced.

  • Compositional balance is determined by the visual weight of each element.
  • When contrast between elements is to great, balance is lost.
  • Proportion and size should also be considered when checking for balance.

Emily

easter

lots of new classes & tips on starting kids early to be creative

Emily’s Bites of Fun:

     Working with Kids:

Helping your child see shapes and colors around them is an important part of nurturing their creativity and artistic abilities (to say nothing of math and engineering skills too!). This can seem like a daunting and extremely easy task all at the same time. It’s just a matter of teaching circles, squares, triangles and red, green, yellow, blue, right? I thought so too until my daughter’s preschool teacher told me that identifying shapes is something my daughter struggles with. I think it’s such a seemingly easy task to teach these basics that I often miss opportunities to teach them in new ways.

One way of helping teach your child about different shapes and seeing them around us is talking about what things look like. For example, what shape does a tree look like? It could be a triangle and a straight line or it could be a circle with a straight line. Another shape to look for is rectangles—all those billboards and store fronts make great examples. Talking about the shapes of letters on signs and stores is another fun option. My 2-year-old son loves playing the spare tire game that we created. We have to find spare tires, circles, while we’re out driving.

If you’re completely stuck or want another way of interacting with shapes, check out these fun picture books.

-Brown Rabbit’s Shapes by Alan Baker

-Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tom Hopgood

-Apples and Robins by Lucie Felix

-Shape Capers by Cathryn Falwell

Another option is to get some square paper and fold it into triangles and then make a smaller square and create some basic animals, such as a dog, cat, bird, and mouse.

A final idea is to save some of the shipping boxes you get when ordering something online and tape them shut or open depending on the size. Use the boxes to create towers and cities or tunnels. One of our favorite “box” books is “The Birthday Box” by Leslie Patricelli.

Most importantly, have fun. If you have fun doing something, it will rub off onto your children and those around you.

A Note From Emily:

I love all the colors of Easter with the fun neutrals and hues.  No matter how you celebrate, make sure you stop to enjoy and take advantage of this time to be creative.

Emily

march

a breath of fresh air and…sun?

Emily’s Bites of Fun:

    • Card editors look for words that have a specific voice – one that says, “from me to you.” When submitting prose or poetry, keep it short, current, and pithy. The design may be what the viewer first look at a card, but what the card says and how it reads if often what sells it.
    • Traditional poetry: A verse using rhymed, metered poetry.  The number of lines is generally divisible by four.
    • Contemporary Prose: Often conversational in tone, this style doesn’t need to rhyme.  It can be a phrase, a single sentence, or as long as 40 lines.

A Note From Emily:

It’s almost spring but with the weather going back and forth, I am still not convinced!  One day it’s beautiful and the next is freezing cold.  I am really looking forward to spring and summer and getting some sun on my face.  How about you? What season do you look forward to?

Is there a difference in glue?

What to use for the best results

Emily’s Tips & Tricks: Some of my favorite and not-so favorite glues to use:

  • Glue Tips: When quilling, I like using Elmer’s regular glue for my projects, for several reasons. One, it dries clear; second, if I realize I made the wrong shape for example a loose circle but I needed a tight circle, I can pull the glued down tail up and re-roll. There’s an element of forgiveness and grace with Elmers. I recently realized that Elmer’s also makes a “New Stronger Formula” which is more of a yellow/brown color. This glue does not dry clear and as a result, I have ruined several projects.I do also like using Alene’s tacky glue for some of my quilling projects. I have learned that with tacky glue there is no forgiveness and grace. Once it on the paper, it stays there. As a result, I only use tacky glue when I want something to stay in place immediately such as when I use glistening/sparkly quilling paper or gluing a design to a metal or mirror magnet or making monogram letters.

It’s christmas eve!

Small bites of fun:

Need a last minute finger-food this weekend, check out these “Santa Strawberries”

Santa Strawberries Recipe
Ingredients:
1 dozen strawberries
1 cup whipped cream
a handful of chocolate sprinkles
Directions:
Using a pairing knife, slice the leafy end off each strawberry so they stand up evenly. Then slice the tip off to make a little hat.
Using a spoon or a large icing tip, place a large dollop (about 1-2 tsp) of whipped cream on top of the strawberry base. Plop the little hat on top. Add another small dollop of whipped cream to the tip of the hat to make a mock pom-pom.
Place two chocolate sprinkles in the Santas “face” for the eyes. Using a toothpick, place two very small splotches of whipped cream down the front of the strawberry for buttons.
You’re done! It’s that easy. If you don’t eat them right away, store them in the fridge to keep them cold. Santa doesn’t do well with heat.

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Part of Carol’s story about papercrafting:

I remember the year my mother taught us how to make heart-shaped baskets out of paper.  We sat together in our little kitchen, the soft hiss of the radiator forcing heat into the room.  Snow was falling  silently on roofs and on newly planted evergreens and pudgy hydrants in a just-built postwar neighborhood in the mid 1950’s.  A pair of scissors and sheets of shiny red paper strips, saying to “thread and loop, thread and loop” as she deftly guided the bands through and around each other until the weaving was done.

I carried forward the tradition of making things with my own children, keeping all sorts of supplies handy, especially at Christmas, when it was our custom to exchange one gift that was handmade.

Make something by hand – it will be a dwelling place for your spirit for all time.  A simple ornament to hang on a tree, yes, but over time, more than that, it will stand as a symbol of tradition, a little place holder in life that embodies all you were and all you were meant to become.

A NOTE FROM EMILY –

My life is a lot like Carol’s.  I grew up crafting and sewing and I also enjoy doing that with my children.  I try to make art available to them and to let them use their imaginations in the process.  Hopefully, it will be a tradition in their homes also with their children.

As in the quote above by Hazelmarie, I don’t know about where you live but where i live it has really been glowing around here lately.  The evenings during twilight and the mornings as the sun rises is giving an amazing glow that shines through the gold, yellow and red leaves and the sky.  Just magic!

Join me for a class – it’s fun to get out of the house and meet others that want a night out.  Or, if you want a day class, check out those below at Impress.  Hope to see you soon!
