HOW TO organize your greeting cards

Emily’s Bites of Fun:

  • Store new or handmade greeting cards in an expandable file or box with dividers.
  • Label each divider so you can sort the cards by occasion or month.
  • Keep a monthly holiday and birthday tracking calendar on the front of each divider, and make cards in advance, storing them in each occasion or monthly section.  You can always personalize them more, later.
  • Clip your favorite pen (you know you all have one – I do!) to the front so that sending the card/s is quick and easy.
  • Store return address labels and postage stamps in the front most pocket.
  • Keep your address book or whatever you use, as an easy reference, in front of the file.
  • Scan or copy handmade cards to reference for future designs. Mark who you sent them to so that you don’t send them the same one again.
  • Keep and easy drop-in envelope in one section.  Use it for addresses torn from envelopes you receive.  Once or twice a year, update your address book, list or electronic device.

lettering

how to add a personal touch

Emily’s Bites of Fun:

  • The art or process of forming letters. Also, letters inscribed. Lettering is an important part of card making, often incorporating various materials.  Stickers, rub-ons, stamping, and computer printing are easy and readily available lettering materials. Dimensional lettering, die cuts and hand-lettering add a personal touch. Calligraphy, illumination and engraving add elegance and style.
  • Don’t wait for a special occasion or a reason to connect.  Send an unexpected card for no particular reason.  A “thinking of you” or “just because” card can be one of the best ways to show someone you care.  Send one today!

Is there a difference in glue?

What to use for the best results

Emily’s Tips & Tricks: Some of my favorite and not-so favorite glues to use:

  • Glue Tips: When quilling, I like using Elmer’s regular glue for my projects, for several reasons. One, it dries clear; second, if I realize I made the wrong shape for example a loose circle but I needed a tight circle, I can pull the glued down tail up and re-roll. There’s an element of forgiveness and grace with Elmers. I recently realized that Elmer’s also makes a “New Stronger Formula” which is more of a yellow/brown color. This glue does not dry clear and as a result, I have ruined several projects.I do also like using Alene’s tacky glue for some of my quilling projects. I have learned that with tacky glue there is no forgiveness and grace. Once it on the paper, it stays there. As a result, I only use tacky glue when I want something to stay in place immediately such as when I use glistening/sparkly quilling paper or gluing a design to a metal or mirror magnet or making monogram letters.

This is a fun season as we look forward to Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and spring!  I am holding a lot of classes in February and March with new classes in May, so make sure you visit my site to find one that fits your schedule.

February is Almost Here

a bunch of roses? how about a bunch of classes!

Remember, classes make a great gift for any occasion.  Don’t forget to see the info on my new Wine Charm class at Goose Ridge Tasting Room in Woodinville in May.  Maybe do this class together for a date night, a birthday or an anniversary!  Whatever the occasion, it will be a great time.

I am also starting new classes at Ben Franklin in May – see below for details.

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Even the Envelope has a history behind it!

  • The Babylonians first wrapped and baked their messages in thin sheets of clay.  Later envelopes were made of cloth, animal skins, or vegetable parts, and prior to 1840 all envelopes were handmade.
  • George Wilson patented the method of tessellating (tiling) a number of envelope patterns across and down a large sheet.  In 1845, Edwin Hill and Warren de la Rue obtained a patent for a steam- driven machine that cut out an envelope shape, then created and folded it.  Thomas Waymouth, who had previously worked on paper bag machinery, developed a self-gumming and folding machine for Berlin and Jones in the late 1860’s.
  • Rectangular envelopes are preferred by the postal service, which reduces the amount of sorting needed to line up all the envelopes with the addresses reading the same way.

What a Hoot!

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Greeting Card Fun Facts:

  • U.S. consumers purchase approximately seven billion greeting cards each year, generating nearly $7.5 billion in retail sales.
  • Women are more likely than men to buy several cards at once.  However, men generally spend more on a single card.
  • Until Christmas 1961, the UK Post Office used to deliver cards on Christmas morning.

A NOTE FROM EMILY:

Speaking of hoots!  I love owls and you can tell by some of the cards that I make.  They are fun just sitting on a branch or fence and it’s fun to give them eyes and different characteristics.  Even though we don’t have any animals of our own in the house, I love the birds outside in my yard as they come each day to see what’s to eat.  I always make sure those feeders are filled up just for them.

I am making some really cool cards in the next few months.  Join me, won’t you?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Having trouble being creative this month?  It happens, even with all the craft fairs and events that we visit this time of year.  Here is a website that shows you gift wrapping ideas.  Take what you’ve made and turn it into something to add to a gift!  Enjoy!

A NOTE FROM EMILY:

I know this can be a busy time, planning, cooking and lots of other things BUT, if you can spare the time, take a class with me.  It will take away a bit of the hustle and bustle and give you some quiet time.  Still can’t squeeze it in for December?  Then, get a January or February class paid for, for after everything settles down.  I would love to hear your holiday stories over coffee at a class!
