What a Hoot!

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Greeting Card Fun Facts:

  • U.S. consumers purchase approximately seven billion greeting cards each year, generating nearly $7.5 billion in retail sales.
  • Women are more likely than men to buy several cards at once.  However, men generally spend more on a single card.
  • Until Christmas 1961, the UK Post Office used to deliver cards on Christmas morning.

A NOTE FROM EMILY:

Speaking of hoots!  I love owls and you can tell by some of the cards that I make.  They are fun just sitting on a branch or fence and it’s fun to give them eyes and different characteristics.  Even though we don’t have any animals of our own in the house, I love the birds outside in my yard as they come each day to see what’s to eat.  I always make sure those feeders are filled up just for them.

I am making some really cool cards in the next few months.  Join me, won’t you?

Happy new year!  Check out what’s new!

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

New Year’s Resolutions:  We all know them and we all have tried them.  Something to consider is when you make your list even if it is just one thing, make sure you also write down your obstacles and challenges that you may face when trying to obtain those intentions.  Then, have a list of how you will deal with the obstacles (your plan B’s).  That will help you know it won’t always be perfect but you will at least be aware that there will be obstacles and have a plan how to deal with them.  Only 8% of people actually keep their New Year’s Resolutions.  This might help in keeping them.

A NOTE FROM EMILY:

It was a wonderful holiday season!  My family and I got away to California in the sunshine and “dried” out a bit.  Don’t get me wrong, it was lovely here in Washington when it snowed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but getting to a warmer climate was also wonderful.  Watching the holidays through my children’s eyes was quite an experience.  They are just so amazed at the little things that it makes me also step back and enjoy those little bits of wonder too.  Hope you had a wonderful season of celebration no matter how you celebrated.

Is one of your resolutions to learn more crafts this year?  Sign up for a class below and let’s get that good intention taken care of.

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

There’s More to Christmas…
There’s more, much more to Christmas
Than candle-light and cheer;
It’s the spirit of sweet friendship
That brightens all the year;
It’s thoughtfulness and kindness,
It’s hope reborn again,
For peace, for understanding
And for goodwill to men!

A NOTE FROM EMILY:

No matter how you celebrate the holidays or if you don’t celebrate them at all it is still a special time.  My children are getting pretty excited and we even had to move the presents from under the tree (advice from my 4-year old) and replace them with stuffed toys because brother (who is almost 2) wouldn’t leave them alone.  The wonder and excitement of Christmas  through the eyes of a child is priceless.  Take time this season to find the “wonder” in things you may have not noticed before…it’s worth it!

I see the turning of a leaf dancing in an Autumn sun, and brilliant shades of crimson glowing when a day is done. ~Hazelmarie Mattie Elliott

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

Part of Carol’s story about papercrafting:

I remember the year my mother taught us how to make heart-shaped baskets out of paper.  We sat together in our little kitchen, the soft hiss of the radiator forcing heat into the room.  Snow was falling  silently on roofs and on newly planted evergreens and pudgy hydrants in a just-built postwar neighborhood in the mid 1950’s.  A pair of scissors and sheets of shiny red paper strips, saying to “thread and loop, thread and loop” as she deftly guided the bands through and around each other until the weaving was done.

I carried forward the tradition of making things with my own children, keeping all sorts of supplies handy, especially at Christmas, when it was our custom to exchange one gift that was handmade.

Make something by hand – it will be a dwelling place for your spirit for all time.  A simple ornament to hang on a tree, yes, but over time, more than that, it will stand as a symbol of tradition, a little place holder in life that embodies all you were and all you were meant to become.

A NOTE FROM EMILY –

My life is a lot like Carol’s.  I grew up crafting and sewing and I also enjoy doing that with my children.  I try to make art available to them and to let them use their imaginations in the process.  Hopefully, it will be a tradition in their homes also with their children.

As in the quote above by Hazelmarie, I don’t know about where you live but where i live it has really been glowing around here lately.  The evenings during twilight and the mornings as the sun rises is giving an amazing glow that shines through the gold, yellow and red leaves and the sky.  Just magic!

Join me for a class – it’s fun to get out of the house and meet others that want a night out.  Or, if you want a day class, check out those below at Impress.  Hope to see you soon!

Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.   ~Anonymous

EMILY’S BITES OF FUN:

How Alison finds inspiration: “I am most inspired when apparent simplicity can become something more complex by the detail, the proportion or the materials I choose to use. In the same way that Japanese origami is intrinsically simple and complex at the same time, it is these paradoxes I try to find in my own work.  What looks simple can often be complex, and vice versa.  I have learned a lot from the Japanese way of doing things – the ritual of tea ceremonies mirroring the ritual of laying out and piecing together sewn patterns.  The structuring of Japanese gardens echoing the proportions of material against material.”

A NOTE FROM EMILY –
